Governor Moore Celebrates Back-to-School with Visit to Katherine Johnson Global Academy

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Moore today joined students and staff at Katherine Johnson Global Academy in celebrating the beginning of a new school year. During his visit the governor highlighted historic investments in Maryland’s public education and touted the Statewide Coaching Program to accelerate academic gains in literacy and math.
“I want us to have the best schools in the nation, and this back to school season we are continuing to build a world class education system here in Maryland,” said Gov. Moore. “Our administration will continue to make historic investments in our community schools, modernize the places where our students learn and make progress to fill the teacher shortage, so that every Maryland student has the tools to succeed.”
At Katherine Johnson Global Academy, Governor Moore met a state teacher coach hired through the Statewide Coaching Program, a data driven program to drive literacy and math gains, while increasing academic proficiency rates and improving teachers retention rates, by deploying trained, state-hired instructional coaches with a singular focus on teacher development and student growth. The FY27 budget included $10.9M to expand the program statewide this school year. This school year, literacy coaches have been deployed in 60 schools across 11 school districts.
Under the leadership of Governor Moore, Maryland is building a best-in-the-nation public education system by making a historic investment in public education in the administration’s FY27 budget, ensuring local school systems have the resources necessary to meet the needs of students.
Beyond securing vital resources to advance the academic needs of students, the governor’s FY27 budget invests over $480 million to modernize aging school facilities; and expands the Grow Your Own program to create career pathways for educators.
Maryland’s investments in public education are delivering real results across the state, helping to drive a post-pandemic learning recovery that ranks in the top five nationwide. According to the 2025 Education Scorecard, Maryland now ranks third in the nation for literacy growth and fifth for mathematics since 2022, fueled by standout progress in districts including Baltimore City, Frederick, Worcester, and Anne Arundel.
